The Life and Times of a Rookie RA

The last couple of days I have been here at Blinn participating in training to be a residential assistant (RA for short). Monday I arrived back at wheeler hall to pack up my things and move into memorial, but little did I know that an air conditioning pipe busted on the second floor of my new residence hall and flooded the entire building. They told me to stay in my old room here and I’d move in on friday at the latest.

On Tuesday We met in the conference room at the housing offices to undergo rookie training. We covered the requirements of an RA and general day to day responsibilities. There are only 4 new RA’s this semester, these include Porter, Joshua, Roxanne, and me. The reason I put their names is because I have been working on my name learning due to the fact that I am about to have to learn 50 new peoples names so I figured I would start small. I also want to add that I have been the only person in the residence hall. IMG_0781

Let me clarify why I have been calling it a residence hall instead of a dorm. We learned in training that we are supposed to build a community within the hall. Mr. Byers told us that a dorm is just a building and a residence hall is an environment. I feel like its my duty to adopt this idea.

Today was the entire RA staff training. We discussed conflict resolution and social justice and the different ways to facilitate room mate agreement discussions. We also learned about programming. I have to plan out 5 events that the hall director and I can set up . the five programs are academic success, community service, a social get together, Life skills, and a civil interaction. Of course all of these will have a catchy title and a whole event planned around it these are just the underlying types of event.

On Tuesday I also managed to figure out how to solve my axis cube. Im suprised at how fast I learned the new cube, now all I have to do is get my time under thirty minuets and I’ll be destined for greatness haha. Along with my new found cubing shills I managed to get to the church to sign the paper work for payroll at the church. Needless to say I have been very productive these past couple of days. Ill be posting again on Friday so be on the look out!

New Year New cube

New years eve was pretty fun! Kyle, Corbin, and I all went over to our neighbor’s house and celebrated. We just hung out, ate and blew up fireworks! As we ring in the new year I have decided to make a couple of resolutions. Im going to get my A1C down and keep it that way, Im going to study more, and lastly try to exercise more. These resolutions are just umbrella goals that I will have to work up to. I feel like umbrella goals are important though, they give you some thing to do haha.

Well getting back on track with relating my new years festivities… After midnight a bunch of the guys stayed at our neighbor’s and we just hung out more and told ghost stories. Because who doesn’t want to get a little freaked out on new years…Right?

A couple days of just being at the house and a low key night at AJ’s house I finally got my new cube! Its called an axis cube and you have to move the sides at angles instead of a strait line. Its just a 3X3 shape mod so its challenging but not a whole new puzzle. Kuykendall says I am addicted, I say I am just and avid cube solver haha. So that is what Im going to be learning for the next couple of days!

A quick thought about going back to Blinn: I am excited to get back to the old grindstone and make this next semester the best one yet. Im thrilled to have gotten the chance to be an RA, I hope I actually get my own room, man what would that be like?

I suppose that is all for now! As school picks back up Ill be able to post more tales about my life. Well, for know readers this is Cole signing out for tonight. Thank you and God speed.
